national language standards

What are they?

  • The approved UK national occupational standards for languages in a work setting.
  • A six-level scale, which sets out the knowledge and skills needed to perform competently in another language, from basic to advanced levels.

Who uses them?

  • Employers, recruitment consultants, training co-ordinators, curriculum planners, course designers, awarding bodies, language tutors and learners themselves.

What are the benefits?

  • The Standards can be used in many ways: for benchmarking, recruitment, training, assessment and accreditation. They are free to download and can be used as appropriate to the context.
